Edgewood ISD is proud to celebrate the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) initiative at Roosevelt Dual Language Academy (RDLA). In partnership with the City of San Antonio, RDLA is committed to creating safe, healthy, and active ways for students to travel to and from campus. This districtwide effort encourages families to walk, bike, and roll to school—supporting student wellness, reducing traffic congestion, and strengthening community safety.
“Walking and biking to school is a heart‑healthy way to start and end the day,” said Joe Conger with the City of San Antonio. “By creating safe routes to school, we increase students’ access to physical activity while also reducing congestion and improving safety around school campuses.”
Safe Routes to School promotes walking and biking to school through education, community engagement, and infrastructure improvements. The program’s goal is to make travel routes safer and more accessible for all children while increasing daily physical activity, easing traffic around schools, fostering neighborhood connections, and teaching lifelong pedestrian and bike safety habits.
Roosevelt Dual Language Academy supports the SRTS initiative through a variety of educational and engagement efforts, including schoolwide assemblies, classroom lessons, family surveys, and a review of safe drop‑off and pick‑up options. School leadership also collaborates closely with the City of San Antonio Transportation Department to evaluate and implement SRTS strategies, such as safety patrols, walking programs, and parent volunteer recruitment.
“Safe Routes to School brings families, staff, and community partners together around a shared goal—student safety and wellness,” said RDLA Principal Martha Esquivel. “It builds relationships, encourages healthy habits, and strengthens our sense of community.”
Students, families, and staff played an active role in shaping the program by completing a campuswide survey to share insights on improving safety and expanding transportation options. To encourage participation, classrooms that completed the survey were entered into a drawing for a special pizza party. Congratulations to Ms. Dominguez’s kindergarten class, Ms. Ramirez’s kindergarten class, and Ms. Iracheta’s second‑grade class for winning this year’s pizza parties.
“Incentives like our pizza party help build excitement and increase parent involvement,” added Principal Esquivel. “That engagement reinforces that walking and biking to school can be both a safe and healthy choice for our students.”
The success of Safe Routes to School reflects the collective effort of the entire Roosevelt Dual Language Academy community. Together, we are creating safer spaces that support active transportation and promote lifelong healthy habits—benefiting students, families, and the community as a whole.
